Seminar on translation issues of Imperial Tombs in Tang China

On Friday, June 28, 2024, at 2:00 PM, our school hosted a seminar titled "Seminar on translation issues of Imperial Tombs in Tang China. Professor Wang Shuanghuai, esteemed historian and doctoral supervisor from Shaanxi Normal University, and author of the book was invited to this seminar. The seminar was chaired by Mrs. He Hua, Director of the MTI Center, with participation from faculty and students of the translation project on Imperial Tombs in Tang China.

During the seminar, Professor Wang shared profound insights into his experiences writing the book and underscored the historical significance of Tang Dynasty imperial tombs in China. Engaging deeply with attendees, he elucidated the archaeological and historical knowledge in the book using accessible and vivid language. Professor Wang also provided invaluable guidance on translating cultural contexts and offered practical advice for future translation endeavors. Responding to queries from students, he addressed topics such as distinguishing auspicious mythical creatures like Tianlu (天禄”), Tianlu(“天鹿”), Qilin 麒麟and Xiezhi,(“獬豸”), explaining the nuances between ceremonial envoys and ritual officials, and detailing the meaning of the Divine Journey Hall. His comprehensive explanations helped resolve many practical translation challenges faced by the participants. Following the seminar, Professor Wang generously provided parallel texts to aid faculty and students in their translation practice.

This seminar has enriched the project team's understanding of the historical, cultural and archaeological aspects covered in Imperial Tombs in Tang China. In a result, it greatly enhanced translation accuracy fostered the sharing of narratives about imperial tombs of Tang Dynasty, further facilitating cultural exchange between East and West.
