College English

"College English" is a compulsory basic course for all undergraduate students at Northwest University, totaling 240 class hours. Levels 1 to 4 mainly focus on teaching "listening," "speaking," "reading," "writing," and "translation." After passing Level 4, the emphasis shifts to "oral communication," "cross-cultural communication," "professional English reading," "professional English writing," and so on.

This course aims to cultivate students' comprehensive English language skills, especially in listening and speaking, enabling them to effectively communicate in English both orally and in writing in their future work and social interactions. It also enhances their ability for independent learning, improves their overall cultural literacy, and enables them to adapt to the needs of China's economic development and international exchanges.

In terms of assessment, a combination of oral and written exams is adopted, with students' classroom language usage also considered in the overall semester score. This approach aims to encourage students to actively participate in language activities in class and change the current situation where students only focus on written exam scores while neglecting oral expression. The implementation of various forms of assessment, instead of solely relying on closed-book exams, provides a more comprehensive reflection of students' learning outcomes, greatly enhances their learning enthusiasm, and achieves excellent learning results.

Translation Course for English Majors

The undergraduate "Translation" premium course for English majors is a senior-level course consisting of English-Chinese and Chinese-English translation teaching. It is a comprehensive teaching system that focuses on English-to-Chinese translation in the early stage of senior year and shifts to Chinese-to-English translation in the advanced stage. The teaching of English-to-Chinese and Chinese-to-English translation is systematically arranged to promote each other, aiming to cultivate professional talents with high-level translation skills.

This course mainly adopts a combination of classroom teaching and after-class practice, emphasized the practicality of language learning, and strengthened the cultivation of students' learning and research abilities. In classroom teaching, the "inductive" and "discussion-based" teaching methods are mainly used to fully mobilize students' enthusiasm, stimulate their learning motivation, and maximize their participation in the learning process. During the teaching process, teachers focus on guiding students to critique and appreciate translated texts, further stimulating students to think actively, breaking the mindset of "there is only one correct answer," bravely attempting translation, and proposing their own translation ideas. Translation assignments are given after each class, and teachers provide feedback and conduct discussions on typical issues in the assignments, which promotes the gradual improvement of students' translation skills.
