Japanese Language & Literature

I. Introduction to the program & its research fields:

  Taking full advantage of NWU’s position as a leading university, this program chiefly conducts the research on Japanese novels, poetry, and dramas, focusing on a comparative research on and the translation studies of Chinese literature and Japanese literature. The program also touches research in the fields of translation theories & practice, comparative linguistics, culture and translation.
  This program includes 2 research fields

1.             Japanese Language & Literature

2.             Translation Studies

II.Objectives of the program:

Students in this program must have a good command of the basic theories of Marxism, adhering to the four cardinal principles, having a sincere love for our country, and must obey the decrees and laws of our country.

The program is designed to arm students with dedication and social responsibility, with high moral quality, rigorous scientific approach, good academic discipline; to strengthen knowledge and skills of the students in the fields of western linguistics and applied linguistics; to improve the research and practical competence of the students in fields of linguistics of the Japanese language, the Japanese language pedagogy, and the teaching of the Japanese language; to prepare the students to get access to the latest development or research findings in the relevant research fields, thus allowing students to tailor their education to their own unique interests or career goals.


III.Curriculum (See the Appendix)

 The program is a 3-year program (with a permitted 2 year extension). Students should get 33 credits to graduate in this program.(20 credits for required degree courses;10 credits for non-degree courses; 2credits for participating in research & academic activities, 1 credit for teaching practice)


IV.Requirements for practical competence

1. Students should have the competence for doing research in the fields of Japanese language & literature; culture studies; be able to propose original ideas and projects and be able to do relevant researches independently.

2. Students should have the competence for the teaching of the Japanese language and for research in the field of pedagogy of the Japanese language in institutions of higher learning, and take on at least 40 class hour classroom teaching.

.Requirements for Academic Dissertations:


 1. Research questions (topics) should meet the requirements of this program in the research fields, which should bear specific theoretical value(s) and pragmatic significance of great importance.
 2. The dissertation should have a clear and definite argument and thesis statement, a logical structure, solid theoretical foundation and should adopt scientific research methods;
 3. The dissertation should be written in English, and of 15000-20000 words, with precise and smooth expression, and format as is prescribed in the standards of MA dissertation by NWU for English Language & Literature program;(1999 edition).
 4. The academic quality of the dissertation should be equal to that widely acknowledged in the field of English Language & Culture studies at home and abroad.


VI.Requirements for academic research:


 1. Students should be able to get access to the historical, current research findings of relevant research fields and any latest development in other related fields.
 2.Students should be able to propose original and creative research questions(topics).
 3.Students should be able to write systematic literature reviews and analytic reports of relevant research projects.
 4. Students should publish 3 first author academic or research papers in the important periodicals or journals before the fulfillment of the program.


VII.Requirements for literature reading, attending academic lectures, and their assessments:

Students should read at least 60 research papers or other relevant literature, including at least 30 written in English.
Assessment: presenting a literature review of present research findings of relevant research fields.

Students should attend the academic meeting or conference of the relevant research fields once, and at least 6 professor lectures of the relevant research fields.
Assessment: regular seminars and irregular checking of learning journals.


VIII.Requirements for Research & Academic Activities:

 For research activities:

Students should participate in at least one research project, undertaking appropriate amount of research work. The chief participant of the project should assess students’ work (with comments). (one credit)

 For academic activities:

   Students should attend 5 academic lectures or seminars, and write a literature review of the research field which should be related to their research topics.

   Students should participate in one academic activity sponsored by NWU, and present one relevant research paper.

   Students should give one academic lecture to a required group of audience.(one credit)
