The Major of Japanese Language and Literature

I. Objectives

 The objectives of the major of the Japanese Language and Literature are to prepare students with both the Japanese language, culture and literature, which shall enable them to engage in interpreting, translating, teaching, and economic and cultural exchanges by using Japanese, such as interpreters and translators in Sino-Japanese joint ventures and Japanese-owned enterprises, tour guides, teachers of the Japanese language in colleges, talents engaged in Sino-Japanese cultural exchanges, and so on.

II. Specifications

 Graduates of the major of Japanese should a solid foundation in the Japanese language, be proficient in the basic skills including listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translating in the Japanese language. They should also master the basic theories of linguistics, learn about the basic knowledge of the Japanese society and Japanese culture, and be familiar with the basic facts of Japan. They should be able to acquire certain knowledge of the Japanese humanities and apply them to communicate with Japanese natives. Nonetheless, they should be able to rite article and do preliminary research in the Japanese language.


 Graduates of the major of Japanese should understand the Chinese language system, the Chinese society and China’s traditional culture. They should be able to use a second foreign language. Moreover, they should master the basic methods in literature retrieval, information seeking and obtaining information on line.

 Graduates of the major of Japanese have the ability to analyze and solve problems and work with others. They should have the innovative and exploring spirits. They should have the basic quality and knowledge needed in foreign-related work. They should have sound personality, good psychological quality, personal cultivation and health.

  The department has always endeavored to improve its curriculum, teaching methods and educational technology to meet the challenges of China's rapid social and economic development. Now it has about 360 undergraduates and 160 MA students. The department prepares its English majors for profound cultural cognition, sturdy translation skills, and excellent oral expressions. Taking its advantage of being a member of a comprehensive university, the department provides its students with opportunities of minoring in other programs in many schools or departments of our university within their four undergraduate years, such as international finance and trade, law, economic management, computer science, etc. Every year through its undergraduate and postgraduate programs, the department graduates large numbers of qualified young men and women who find positions in the fields of foreign affairs, foreign trade, finance, journalism, education and research, tourism, publishing and cultural exchange.

 

Curriculum structure

 

Core courses
 Basic Japanese Advanced Japanese, Extensive Reading, Japanese-Chinese Interpretation, Listening, Oral Japanese, etc.


Practical Training
 Academic year thesis, graduation thesis, graduation practice, national defense education, social activities, etc.
The undergraduate program of the Japanese Language and Literature lasts for 4 years. According to the rules of Japanese teaching, generally, the 4-year teaching process is divided into two stages, namely the foundation stage (the first grade and the second grade) and the higher stage (the third grade and the fourth grade).
Courses in the Japanese program are divided into the six parts, namely, the general courses, core courses in the discipline, discipline direction courses, elective courses, selective courses of general education, and practical training.


Minimum Credits Requirement
 To graduate, students should obtain about 157 credits including 33 credits in general courses, 52 credits in core courses, 20 credits in discipline orientation courses, 18 credits in elective courses of specialty, 12 credits in general education courses and 22 credits social practice.
